The mainstem Nehalem is still in good condition, and should fish well for another week. There are no hatchery releases on the Nehalem mainstem, but there should be wild steelhead throughout the system. This is probably one of the better options for catch-and-release fishing this week. There is a fair amount of spawning activity taking place this time of year, and anglers are encouraged to avoid spawning fish and redds (spawning nest).
The Nehalem River upstream of Hwy. 26 at Elsie closed to steelhead fishing on April 1, as did Cook Creek and the Salmonberry River in the Nehalem basin.
The North fork has been slow, and effort has been light. The hatchery run is over, but there are still a few wild fish available for catch-and-release throughout the system. Conditions remain low and clear this week.
